Loving the craft of Lovecraft

I just got back from the H. P. Lovecraft film fest. I expect to have weird dreams tonight. Whisperer in the Dark was especially impressive--it's filmed to look and feel like a 1931 film, and even includes a biplane and a 1929 Mercedes Benz. I especially liked the costumes, architecture, and decor (of course).

Update on that Last Post

I just did a little more revision to my novella "The Witch's Familiar" and resubmitted it to Wormhole Electric. I've really got my hopes on this one. I should submit my writing more often.

This Morning's Accomplishments

Today I've submitted four poems to the Four and Twenty site and one story to the Boston Review story contest. There, I've gotten something done. Now I'm ready to take a nap before I continue revising a novella and resubmitting it to a webzine.

Wormhole Electric

Here's the science fiction & fantasy webzine I'm pretty sure is going to publish a novella of mine (I'm currently revising it and must resubmit by October 1):

Urban Chickens in Portlandia

Walking from Sweetpea brunch, I saw three chickens in a yard. I stood watching them, and they came out and down the front steps to meet me. They followed me down the sidewalk until I turned around and chased them back into their yard. Meanwhile, an assortment of rain-dampened socks dangled from my hand, because I had just picked them out of a "free" box so I can make sock creatures.

Stuff I Accidentally Incorporate into Fiction

It's weird when someone reads your manuscript and makes an observation like, "It's basically the Cinderella story," when such a thing never crossed your mind. But that is one of the perks of sharing your work with others. Under circumstances like that, clearly something subconscious was taking place.

Years ago I started writing a series of supernatural short stories that involved a young woman, her brother, and her male cousin. While reading a book about Greek mythology, I realized the young woman and her brother were variations on the siblings Diana and Apollo; their cousin was a lot like Narcissus.
